Alagappa University was brought into existence by a Special Act of the Government of Tamil Nadu in May 1985 with the objective of fostering research, development and dissemination of knowledge in various branches of learning. Alagappa University is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India. The University has 29 Departments, 6 Centres and 2 Constituent Colleges on its campus. 35 Affiliated Colleges, 1 Autonomous College located in the districts of Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram are part of the University. Alagappa University College of Arts and Science is also functioning at Paramakudi as a Constituent College.

The Directorate of Distance Education was established in the University in 1992. The Directorate offers Under Graduate and Post Graduate Programmes in the disciplines of Management, Computer Applications, Science, Education and Languages.
The Directorate offers various innovative, job-oriented and socially relevant 56 academic programmes in the field of Arts, Science, Information Technology, Education and Management. It has an excellent network of more than 218 Study Centres for providing effective service to the student community.
The Distance Education programmes are also offered in South-East Asian countries such as Singapore and Malaysia; and in Middle-East countries, viz., Bahrain, Qatar, Dubai; and at Sri Lanka. The programmes are well received in India and abroad.
