The illustrious man believed in setting aside a portion of the profits from his businesses for charitable activities, especially in the field of education and healthcare, which he considered to be the fundamental right of every human being. He said "My dharma is to work so that I can give". His concern led him to establish the Smt. P. D. Hinduja Trust in 1944 under the aegis of which the college was established. The institution functions under the guidance of the Hinduja Foundation which is a part of the Hinduja Group that was established in 1914.
Over the years the college has literally and figuratively grown from strength to strength. It started with student strength of 400 in 1974 and has reached a figure of about 7000 at this point in time, while the number of teachers has increased from 12 up to 105. The college which started with a single Commerce course today offers 41 courses from the Higher Secondary up to the Doctorate level and includes both the Commerce, Science and Arts streams.
